We will always strive to treat families with the utmost respect and dignity, by only sharing sensitive and confidential information where we have permission, or if we have a duty to do so, in order to protect the child.

We teach our pupils about safeguarding, to ensure they know how to keep themselves safe and reduce risks. From Reception to Year 6, pupils learn about safeguarding in relation to online safety, water, road and fire safety, and first aid. 

Operation Encompass is a partnership between police and schools. Operation Encompass is a scheme that ensures schools have timely information about police attended incidents of domestic abuse involving children.

One of the principles of Operation Encompass is that all incidents of domestic abuse are shared with schools, not just those where an offence can be identified. For many years now, Killinghall CE Primary School has worked with North Yorkshire Police and Operation Encompass to support pupils who may have experienced domestic violence. Operation Encompass works by reporting to the schools when a child or young person has experienced domestic abuse, or is resident in a house where domestic abuse has occurred and has been reported to the police.

Operation Encompass ensures that a member of the school staff, known as a Key Adult, is trained to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared, in confidence, to support children in school with any difficulties they may experience as a result of domestic violence. Our Key Adults are Mrs Mason (Designated Safeguarding Leader) and Mrs Thornton (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leader).

The Prevent Duty is a government strategy aimed at preventing people from being drawn into harmful ideologies or extremist activity. It applies to all education providers, including primary schools, and requires them to safeguard learners from radicalisation and extremism.

As a school, we ensure we protect children from the risks of radicalisation and extremism through our safeguarding procedures. We also nprovide a safe environment in which controversial issues can be discussed and build our pupils’ resilience and self-esteem to enable them to challenge extremist views. At Killinghall CE Primary School, we have made all staff aware of our responsibilities under the Prevent Duty. We ensure that all other relevant policies comply with the Prevent Duty. Through our RE and PHSE curriculum and our work on Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development, including fundamental British values, we enable children to explore a wide range of issues safely.

All staff and governors have undergone Prevent Duty online training. This is refreshed annually, with retraining taking place every two years.
