PE Day: Monday. We will be swimming in the morning and have a PE lesson in the afternoon. Children are to come to school wearing their P.E. kits.

Homework Due/Spelling Test: Monday

Reading is important in Year 6 because it helps your child grow as a learner. If they read often, their vocabulary expands, allowing them to choose more effective words in their own writing. It also improves their understanding of different texts, which makes lessons easier to follow.

Enjoying books and discovering new perspectives within the pages of a story can be a great way to introduce children to a range of experiences and viewpoints. The more a child reads, the more likely they are to be exposed to new narratives which can help them develop empathy.

At Killinghall, we believe reading opens your mind. It takes you to exciting places, builds imagination and prepares pupils for secondary school. We encourage everyone to succeed and believe  reading every day is an important aspect of this so please support your child to develop a love of reading.

Here is a list of recommended books your child can read to help support their literacy skills. There are also recommended reads on our reading tree in our classroom.

We would appreciate your support in encouraging your child to build an independent routine whereby they complete their homework and return it to school on time. This will set them in good stead for high school.

Every Tuesday, homework books go home for completion and are due back in school on Monday morning for marking and feedback. Weekly spelling lists are given to learn, which can be practised using their individual Spelling Shed log ins, and they are tested on these words on Monday morning. We also go through all the homework together after the spelling test.

At school, we encourage all pupils to 'sit like an effective writer'. This means they sit up straight, tuck their chair in, have their feet firmly placed on the floor and hold their paper with their non-writing hand. Please reinforce this message at home.

Year 6 SATs are national tests taken by children in Year 6, in May. They check how well pupils can use their knowledge and skills in reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and mathematics. Writing is also assessed through teacher judgement. The tests help teachers and parents see what a child has learned before they move to secondary school. They are important, but they are only one part of a pupil’s learning. With revision, practice and a calm mind, children can do their best and show what they know.

We hold an annual Parents' Information Evening during the Autumn Term to provide information to parents about what the SATs entail, and how you can best support your child. In the Spring term, parents also have the opportunity to take part in a SATs stay-and-learn session with their children. We run SATs Booster Clubs throughout the year.
